I'd like to learn Hungarian. It would be nice if I could get to the point of being able to puzzle out an average written text, with the help of a dictionary. My hypothesis is that that's the point where learning the language goes from being difficult and frustrating, to slightly less difficult and actually kind of fun.

Oh cool! I get to start 2008 by being useful to someone:

Hmm—I'd been planning self-study (the one from http://www.fsi-language-courses.com/), but a two-week or a month-long course in Hungary might be a better approach. (It's hard to find a month with nothing I don't want to miss, though. Still, it might be worth sacrificing a film festival to do the longer version.)

Thank you for the suggestions.

The links aren't all study programs. In particular, the second and the last have links to language resources including chat rooms, etc. I think the last one might be of the most use, since it's in DC.

So far as study in Hungary goes, there's a summer program in Debrecen (surely listed at the IU site) that has a very good reputation.

I did look at the different links—what I meant was, now that I'm thinking of all the different possibilities, that a course in Hungary might be the best choice. The one in DC is a possibility, but I think I'd prefer a two-week or four-week course that meets five days a week (which I can get in Hungary) to a 12-week course that meets one night a week.

I won't sign up for anything until I get back from India, so I have a few weeks to think about it.

One more thing to think about: beginner courses are easier to come by in the US. It might be to your advantage to take a beginner course here and then take an intermediate course in Hungary. You'll be more prepared to take advantage of opportunities to actually use the language in that case.

I had three years of formal training in Polish (two in US, one in Poland) before living there and was still struggling with the language (after gliding through French and German). I understand Hungarian is much harder than Polish.
